3 ESSENTIAL ESCAPE TECHNIQUES TO TEACH YOUNG CHILDREN WHEN LEFT BEHIND INSIDE A VEHICLE

Equipping children with vital escape skills is of paramount importance, as it enables them to protect themselves in perilous situations. Join MMV as we explore 3 fundamental methods which can enable children to protect themselves should they be inadvertently left behind inside a vehicle: 

1. Sound the horn 

Currently, in most car models, the horn is a component that remains operational even when the engine is off or the key is removed. This is due to the horn’s electrical connection being directly linked to the battery, providing a power source that allows for its continuous activation over several hours. Therefore, if a child is aware of the horn’s location and sounds it repeatedly, they can easily attract the attention of nearby individuals for assistance to exit the vehicle. 

2. Activate the hazard lights 

The hazard light button, located on the vehicle’s dashboard, is easily identifiable by its distinctive triangular design and prominent colors. Similar to the horn, hazard lights can still function even when the vehicle is turned off. In critical circumstances, children can simultaneously activate the hazard lights and sound the horn to heighten awareness and signal for help from passersby. 

3. Locate the unlock button on the driver’s seat 

Children should search for the unlock buttons located on the side of the driver’s seat to find a way out of the vehicle. Nowadays, most vehicle models are designed to allow unlocking from the inside. Simply pressing the button, then pulling and pushing the door handle outwards will enable them to open the door. 

The most crucial aspect is for children to maintain a stable mindset and avoid panic in dangerous situations. When calm, they can more easily apply the skills they have learned, thereby increasing their self-protection capabilities. 

Helping children understand the steps to take in emergency situations is of vital importance. Therefore, do remember the aforementioned basic techniques to share and practice with your child.
