COMPATIBILITY OF CHILD SAFETY EQUIPMENT ACROSS MITSUBISHI VEHICLE LINEUP
Equipping cars with child safety seats is the optimal solution to protect young children on every journey. To help families proactively choose the right protective solution, Mitsubishi Motors Vietnam shares several key insights into suitable child seat standards as well as the compatibility of child seats across the current Mitsubishi vehicle lineup.
Technical standards and classification of child seats
When purchasing a car seat for their children, parents need to clearly understand the classification systems based on the child’s physical build to ensure the highest level of safety. According to the Child Restraint System (CRS) and the Enhanced Child Restraint System (ECRS), safety equipment is divided into the following basic groups:
- Group 0 (Under 10 kg): Infant car beds/carrycots, mandatory to be installed rear-facing to provide maximum protection for newborns.
- Group 0+ (Under 13 kg): Rear-facing seats that help provide optimal support and protection for the child’s head and neck area.
- Group I (From 9 kg to 18 kg): Seats with a dedicated 5-point harness, which can be installed either forward-facing or rear-facing depending on the child’s physical development.
- Group II (From 15 kg to 25 kg): High-back booster seats, used in combination with the vehicle’s standard 3-point seatbelt.
- Group III (From 22 kg to 36 kg): Backless booster cushions, which help children sit higher so that the vehicle’s safety seatbelt can be fastened across the correct position.
Classification according to popular international safety standards:
When purchasing a child car seat, consumers frequently encounter international safety certifications, most notably Europe’s ECE R44/04 and i-Size (ECE R129). Key differences include:
| Comparison criteria | ECE R44/04 standard | i-Size (ECE R129) standard |
| Classification basis | Based on the child’s weight | Based on the child’s height |
| Installation method | ISOFIX or vehicle’s 3-point seatbelt | Mandatory rigid ISOFIX anchors |
| Side-impact testing | Not mandatory | Mandatory testing with side-impact force sensors |
Step-by-Step installation guide for Child safety seats with the ISOFIX system
To ensure the safety seat provides maximum protection, the installation process should follow these steps:
- Locate: Find the 2 rigid locking hooks at the positions with the ISOFIX symbol (round steel bars) at the intersection between the seat cushion and the vehicle’s seatback.
- Lock tight: Push the two ISOFIX connectors of the child seat into the vehicle’s ISOFIX anchors until you hear a clear “Click” and the safety indicator on the seat body turns green.
- Top Tether anchor: Route the Top Tether strap behind the child seat under the headrest, hook it into the designated anchorage point (usually behind the seatback or in the trunk), and pull it tight.
- Check: Firmly shake the child seat base to ensure there is minimal movement in any direction.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Simultaneous installation of both ISOFIX and the vehicle seatbelt: This alters the inertia force distribution mechanism during a collision, causing the plastic seat frame to crack or break. Only use a single securing method (either ISOFIX or the vehicle seatbelt) according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Leaving the seat’s internal harness loose or twisted: Always check to ensure the child seat’s own harness fits closely against the child’s body.
Compatibility of Mitsubishi vehicle lineup with Child safety seats
All vehicle models currently distributed by Mitsubishi Motors Vietnam are optimally designed to be compatible with child safety devices. The convenient ISOFIX system in the second row allows for the installation of 2 child seats at the outboard positions of the seat row, including:
- 7-seater cars: Xpander, Xpander Cross, Pajero Sport, Destinator
- Pickup trucks: All-New Triton
These models are highly rated in the child occupant safety testing within the ASEAN NCAP evaluation system.
Outstanding advantages of Mitsubishi vehicles when using Child safety seats:
- Ample space for both child seats: The advantage of a spacious second row allows customers to comfortably install 2 child seats at the same time without them being jammed or tightly pressed against the vehicle doors.
- Simple installation/removal: The smart seat structure enables quick engagement of the locking connectors, securely anchoring the child seat to the vehicle chassis for safety while saving parents time and effort during installation.
- Airy and cool environment: Young children can easily sweat when sitting fixed in one position during long journeys. The high and airy ceiling design combined with the fast, deeply cooling air conditioning system and independent rear air vents keeps the cabin air well-ventilated and pleasant for the baby.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
- If a family has multiple young children traveling together in a 7-seater vehicle like theXpanderor Destinator, is there enough space to install multiple safety seats?
Answer: Absolutely. The advantage of the spacious second row in Mitsubishi’s 7-seater vehicles makes side-by-side installation of 2 child seats simultaneously very easy, convenient, and ensures maximum safety for the children.
- Is a dedicated safety device required if a child is under 10 years old but stands 1.35 m or taller?
Answer: It is not mandatory. The new legal regulation only mandates the use of child seats when both conditions are met simultaneously: being under 10 years old AND having a height under 1.35 m. In cases where the child is not yet 10 years old but is already over 1.35 m tall, they can directly use the vehicle’s standard seats and fasten the built-in 3-point seatbelts.
- Which Mitsubishi Motors models come standard with ISOFIX anchors?
Answer: All models distributed by Mitsubishi Motors Vietnam come equipped with standard ISOFIX anchoring systems in the rear seats. The prominent lineup includes: Xpander, Xpander Cross, Xforce, Outlander, Pajero Sport, All-New Triton, and the newcomer 7-seater SUV Destinator. Parents can easily locate these anchor points via the “ISOFIX” fabric labels or pre-fitted plastic buttons at the intersection between the seatback and the seat cushion of the rear seats.
